What Is MARPE?

MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) is a specialized orthodontic technique used to widen the upper jaw (palate). A palatal expander is supported by temporary miniscrews placed in the palate to guide expansion.

The goal of MARPE is skeletal expansion of the upper jaw, rather than expansion driven mainly by tooth movement.

This treatment is most often considered for older teenagers and adults, when the bones of the upper jaw are more resistant to change with traditional palatal expanders.

Why MARPE Is Combined With Braces or Aligners

MARPE is not a complete orthodontic treatment on its own. Expanding the upper jaw is typically just one stage of a full orthodontic treatment plan.

After expansion, treatment usually continues with:

  • Braces or clear aligners to properly align the teeth
  • Bite correction and stabilization
  • Retention to help maintain expansion long term

This comprehensive approach helps improve treatment predictability and reduces the risk of relapse.

Is There an Additional Fee for MARPE?

Dr. Paxon considers MARPE part of your custom orthodontic treatment plan and does not charge a separate fee for this procedure at this time.
